What Should Be Considered After Orthodontic Treatment?
Tooth movements made during orthodontic treatment want to return (recurrence) after treatment. The reason why the teeth want to return to their old state is that both the gingival fibers are flexible and the movements such as biting and chewing move the teeth to the front. Protecting our teeth, which become straight after orthodontic treatment, is as important as the treatment itself. By doing good oral care, preventing tooth decay, and using the palate given by our orthodontist, preventing the teeth from going back to their old places, ensures that our teeth look good and fully perform the chewing function for a lifetime.
Orthodontists usually take 2 types of precautions to prevent recurrence. One of them is fixed protectors that are applied to the inner side of the lower teeth after the brackets are removed. These protectors are not felt in any way and can be easily cleaned. Another type of protector applied is the movable protector. These are transparent and usually worn at night during sleep. After the end of the treatment, they are worn for 24 hours in the first month and the wearing time is gradually reduced according to the preference of the orthodontist.
